THE CHALLENGES OF ITALIAN COUPLES-

SCAMPOLI / BIANCHIN (ITA) – MEGAN / NICOLE (CAN) 2-1 (21-12, 18-21, 15-12) –

Claudia Scampoli and Valentina Bianchin beat the Canadians Megan-Nicole 2-1 opening the “blue night” of the Foro Italico with a success that smacks of business. The opponents, undefeated in the tournament so far (3 wins out of 3), gave up after three sets played by the blues with attention, technique and a great spirit of sacrifice. Scampoli and Bianchin started great, winning 21-12 in the first set (with an advantage even of +10 over 14-4), then they immediately recovered from the Canadians in the second (18-21), managing in the tie break to find the energy needed to raise your head and close the games on 15-12. Deserved victory that projects Claudia and Valentina to tomorrow’s Italian derby, valid for the round of 16 of the World Cup against Menegatti and Gottardi.

THE PROTAGONISTS-

Claudia Scampoli-«Today we gave our best and we are clearly happy with the result. We had a somewhat difficult start in this world championship, but we are putting a lot of heart and determination into every race. We are improving game after game and we want to show that we are competitive in this important event ».

Margherita Bianchin- «We are satisfied with our performance today. Our opponents were very good, they never gave up and made our life very hard “.

CARAMBULA / ROSSI (ITA) – GRIMALT M./GRIMALT E. (CIL) 0-2 (17-21, 18-21) –

The world journey of the Azzurri Carambula-Rossi, beaten this evening by the Chilean Grimalt M./Grimalt E. 0-2 (17-21, 18-21), ended in the round of 32.
In the first set Carambula-Rossi struggled to get into the game, thanks to several gratuitous mistakes. The Chileans for long stages gave the impression of having the partial in hand (12-15), but the Italian couple did not give up. Adrian and Enrico placed a heavy break and within a few exchanges the games reopened (17-17). The Italian couple, having found parity, suffered an empty pass and the partial counter of Grimalt-Grimalt proved decisive (17-21).
The script repeated in the second set with Grimalt-Grimalt taking the lead (9-11). The Azzurri chased their opponents for a long time, up to just one point away (15-16). The comeback attempt, however, was unsuccessful and Grimalt-Grimalt extinguished the dreams of the Italian couple (18-21).

THE PROTAGONISTS-

Enrico Rossi- «We knew that with the start of the knockout phase it would be very tough. The opponents knew about our physical situation and used this situation to their advantage. Their coach, Paulao, knows us very well and prepared the game very well. The audience at the Foro Italico this evening was fantastic and supported us from start to finish. For our part, we always try to take the field to play good games and give a show to the people in the stands. The balance of this world championship on the one hand is negative for the final result obtained, on the other hand we ran the risk of not participating in this important event and therefore I am happy to have passed the group. In all the games we played I tried to help Adrian as much as possible, unfortunately his physical status is not optimal and we gave the best of what we could give ».

NICOLAI / COTTAFAVA (ITA) – DIAZ / ALAYO (CUB) 2-0 (21-18, 21-18) –

The blues Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava did not betray the expectations and in the Central of the Foro Italico, in front of a beautiful setting of the public, they overtook the Cubans Diaz-Alayo 2-0 (21-18, 21-18).
The Italian couple had to fight for a long time in the first set to get the better of Diaz / Alayo, a formation that proved difficult (14-13). The Cubans resisted until (19-18), then they had to surrender to the Azzurri (21-18).
In the second fraction two Nicolai’s walls launched the Italian escape (6-3). Subsequent actions confirmed the superiority of Paolo and Samuele, good at increasing the advantage (9-4). As the game progressed, the Azzurri had a harder time closing the exchanges and their opponents shortened the gap (18-16), without ever questioning the final result (21-18).
Tomorrow in the round of 16 (9 pm) Nicolai / Cottafava will face the Brazilian Renato / Vitor Felipe.

THE PROTAGONISTS-

Paolo Nicolai- « Tonight’s match was tough, the Cubans put us in difficulty. We expected a physical match, but I was surprised by their consistency in staying in the game even in difficult moments. We, on the other hand, were good at managing the match and bringing home this important result. Tomorrow will be another battle, the Brazilians we meet in the quarterfinals are playing very well. A quarter-final in a world championship is necessarily tough. We, as always, will be focused and will give everything to win “.

Samuele Cottafava- «Playing tonight in a Foro Italico with so many people was wonderful. For me it was the first time to play with this atmosphere. We heard a lot of cheering and they certainly gave us a big hand “: I will certainly remember for a long time this beautiful evening spent here in Rome”.

The Italian couple dragged by the crowd at the Centrale jumped through the round of 32 and gained access to the second round, where tomorrow (10pm) they will face the Dutch Brouwer / Meeuwsen: seeded n.3 on the scoreboard and in 2013 world title winners.

THE PROTAGONISTS-

Alex Ranghieri- «Roma helped us tonight, we had some problems in the serve at the beginning but then we were great at shooting the serve. The Dutch opponents are strong, we know them well. I expect to contain them a lot on the wall. It will be a match to be faced while remaining very lucid. We need our best performance ».

Daniele Lupo- «This is the beach, the show is the interaction with the public. And the Foro Italico was splendid tonight, it gave us an incredible charge. Alex is playing a great tournament, we can go far ».
