Rome, capital of cinema: how many new features are on the way!

ROME – Via Veneto becomes 600-seat cinema hall for the screening of a symbolic film, Roman holidays with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, Sunday 24 Julyand the Park of the Aqueducts to the Appio Claudio district – from which Marcello Mastroianni’s helicopter ride began in the opening scene of Federico Fellini’s Dolce Vita and in which Paolo Sorrentino set some scenes from the Oscar film La Grande Bellezza – becomes arena from 20 July to 4 August for 600 seats, showing restored masterpieces presented by great authors. In Rome we start from memory and go towards the future for the Rome Capital of Cinema project, enhancing the historical vocation of the city and at the same time relaunching on an increasingly important sector economically (thousands of employees and full-scale productions) and on which culturally it was decided to bring order to give continuity, strength and structure 365 days a year.

Of “Rome capital of cinema. All year round and throughout the city“spoke the mayor Roberto Gualtieri and of “relaunch for the whole city and for the whole year“the president of the Lazio Region Nicola Zingaretti who baptized the plan of the activities of the Cinema Foundation for Rome and presented who will put it into practice: the president of the Foundation Gian Luca Farinelli and the artistic director Paola Malanga which is responsible for the Film Fest, whose 17th edition will be held from 13 to 23 October.

The connection with the unique historical memory of the capital is a starting point and is one of the reasons why the choice of the new president of the Foundation obviously fell months ago on Farinelli, film historian and president of the Cineteca di Bologna. This baggage is different and complementary, as he pointed out the councilor for culture Miguel Gotorfrom that of the director Malanga (on a three-year leave of absence from Rai Cinema): together they will promote the community and social experience of cinema viewing, trying to help overcome the crisis in the business.

Among the news announced, in addition to the free arena at the Aqueducts (a stone’s throw from the cult site of Cinecittà) and Vacanze Romane, always with free admission, in the shadow of Porta Pinciana, the confirmation of the other arena, Floating Theater Summer Festthe film review on water at the Eur lake, conceived and organized by Fabia Bettini and Gianluca Giannelli, artistic directors of Alice nella città, in collaboration with Eur spa, scheduled from 18 August to 24 September and completely environmentally friendly.

All summer arenas that are added to those for example of the boys of the Cinema America. Meanwhile, the tenth edition of Cinema at MAXXIcurated by Mario Sesti, with a selection of the most innovative Italian auteur cinema, between research and experimentation, while also from the MAXXI between November and December will be held the Extra Doc Festival all focused on the documentary.

From 1 January 2023 Roma Capitale – it was announced today by the mayor Gualtieri – will entrust the management and programming of the Casa del cinema directed by Giorgio Gosetti to Cinema Foundation for Rome which will thus equip itself with a cinema hall and a structure. As for the Rome Film Fest, whose billboard will be announced on 22 September and on whose budget there is talk (without figures) of an increase in investment, the project for the 17th edition from 13 to 23 October was illustrated by Paola Malanga.

The biggest novelty is the introduction of the international competition entitled Progressive Cinema which will be accompanied by three non-competitive sections Freestylewith the aim of showing all kinds of formats, lengths and styles on the big screen, from video art to TV series “, Grand Public with more mainstream titles and then Restorations and Retrospectives.

The meetings with the publicwhich has always been a strong point of the Festival, are confirmed with formats that are however different from the past: Paso Doblewith a dialogue between two authors e Absolute Beginners, in which an established author will recall his first steps in cinema. “It will not be a world premieres festival, which we leave as the prerogative of the Venice Film Festival – said Malanga – rather it will be a welcoming party, open to the new cinema and without precluding platforms“.
