Grande successo per l’evento “MORE THAN A GAME” di Milano
Three years after his last visit, the NBPA Foundation – the “rib” of the NBA players’ union, dedicated to enhancing and promoting the concrete work they carry out around the world to strengthen their communities and create meaningful social change – returned to Italy with a new initiative, the event “MORE THAN A GAME “ staged in Milan.

This project, which took place from 13 to 15 June in the Lombard capital, had as protagonists some young athletes from the Tam Tam Basketball Academy in Castel Volturno, invited to participate in a program of meetings and lessons at the SDA Bocconi University.

Founded in 2016 under the guidance of coach Massimo Antonelli, the Tam Tam Basketball Academy is a company created to offer young people – mostly born in Italy to immigrant parents – the opportunity to carry out sporting activities totally free, offering where necessary also individual psychological assistance and group. All in one province, that of Castel Volturno, the protagonist of a strong social unease and the highest percentage of immigrants in Italy, almost all of African origin and with serious integration problems. Among these, many young people who do not have Italian citizenship would not be able to practice sports and access other services, were it not thanks to the support of Antonelli and the Tam Tam company.

During the 3 days of activity at Bocconi, these young people were able to develop a concept map that would help them define their own path of growth, and that would teach them how to achieve their goals, despite daily challenges or discriminatory laws, learning how make a significant impact in their communities and strive for more ambitious goals. In a safe and constructive space that favored their involvement, the program included debates on the theme of culture, the search for one’s own identity and the complexity deriving from multiculturalism. And to moderate the interventions, well-known personalities on the web or in the business world, who were the first to deal with these problems and who represent success stories.

Not only moments of training and culture, but also entertainment and sport: on Tuesday 14, in fact, the “SKILLS & DRILLS EVENT” was held at the Bocconi Sports Center, an afternoon dedicated to basketball in which the boys they were able to train and challenge in the discipline that most passionate them. And to make this special occasion even more precious, there was also the passage of some NBA players, who animated the scene and accompanied the boys on the parquet in some phases of the game, dispensing advice and helping them to hone their skills. In detail, the speakers were Danilo Gallinari (Atlanta Hawks), Thanasis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks), Jusuf Nurkic (Portland Trail Blazers), Bismack Biyombo (Phoenix Suns) and Chimezie Metu (Sacramento Kings).

“It was exciting to see the involvement of NBA players with these young athletes over the course of the week” commented Lyzz Ogunwo, Executive Director of the NBPA Foundation. “In particular, at the More than a Game event Chimezie took the time to welcome the young people into the program and Thanasis spoke directly with them. Having faced similar challenges when he lived in Greece, Thanasis has a very similar story to these guys, and he can be a source of inspiration for them. I am happy that the NBPA was able to convey what we showed in Milan in an authentic and representative way of our players. “
