Golden Gala without Jacobs, but how many stars: Tamberi-Barshim challenge

The Golden Gala is ready to open the dance in Rome, at the Olympic stadium, on 9 June, but will have to do it without the most anticipated champion, Marcell Jacobs, still injured and out for a first degree distraction-elongation. In the 100 meters there will be no Jacobs, and so eyes on the Americans Fred Kerley and Trayvon Bromell, respectively 100m Olympic silver and world leader last season (9.76). Kerley is the “Diamond League champion” of 2021, and boasts a staff of 9.84, achieved in the final in Tokyo in the head to head with Jacobs. The only presence in Rome of Bromell dates back to 2016, seventh in the 200, a few months after having triumphed in the 60 at the Indoor World Championships in Portland. The American, who was also world bronze in Beijing 2015 in the 100 meters, finished last year at the top of the world lists with 9.76. The other US Marvin Bracy and the Chinese Su Bingtian are also on track (6 / o in the Tokyo final). The 200 will live on the comparison between the other components of the blue Olympic gold relay (Lorenzo Patta, Fausto Desalu, and Filippo Tortu), and two finalists of the Tokyo half-lap: the Canadian Aaron Brown and the trinidegno Jereem Richards.

The female will be there fastest woman in the world, the Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah, triple gold medalist at the Tokyo Games (100, 200 and 4×100) and one of the greatest world stars of this era, elected athlete of the year 2021 by World Athletics. She will go in search of the fourth success at the Golden Gala, but she awaits a sensational challenge in the 200 meters against many of the best sprinters in the world: the Olympic champion of 400 Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bahamas), the British world gold 200 Dina Asher-Smiththe legend Allyson Felix (USA) in his last competition in Rome before retiring and the indoor world gold of 60 Mujinga Kambundji (Switzerland). Tamberi-Barshim again

In the 400 men an exciting competition is announced with Michael Cherry, gold in Tokyo with the men’s 4×400, world champion in Doha and reigning champion of the Diamond League. The 27-year-old American will compete with Olympic champions from London (Kirani James, Grenada) and Rio de Janeiro (world record holder Wayde Van Niekerk, South Africa). Protagonists of one of the most symbolic moments of world sport, the shared gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Gianmarco Tamberi and Mutaz Essa Barshim will return to compete in the fifth stage of the Wanda Diamond League. Tamberi was also, in 2021, the winner of the Diamond League while Barshim, gold at the World Championships in London 2017 and Doha 2019, in Rome made one of the most beautiful jumps of his career, the 2.41 which gave him success in 2014. The two friends will find three other Olympic finalists: the Australian Brandon Starc, the American JaVaughn Harrison, and the Canadian Django Lovett, as well as the dangerous Ukrainian Andriy Protsenko.

Along women and march

The long women is another contest-cover of the 2022 Golden Gala: the German Malaika Mihambo (gold at the Games) will face the indoor world champion, the Serbian Ivana Spanovic-Vuleta, and two other finalists of the Games, the Ukrainian Marina Bekh-Romanchuk, and the British Jazmin Sawyers. Also on the platform the very young blue Larissa Iapichino.
