For Italy, the first day of the Beach Volleyball World Cup could not have ended better. The sisters Reka and Viktoria Orsi Toth made the Centrale del Foro Italico rejoice thanks to a splendid victory over the Brazilians Taiana Lima and Hegeile: after dominating the first set (14-21), the blues also led the second set, resisting the final comeback of the green-gold couple thanks to greater effectiveness in the service and in defense.
” We told ourselves to start aggressive and we did it – the words of Viktoria – This convincing start surprised us, but we are in great shape “.
” I’ve been waiting for this match for years, I couldn’t sleep tonight but it worked: it’s a wonderful emotion to play in front of this audience and next to my sister, I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for a lifetime“the statements of Reka.
POOL B: LUPO / RANGHIERI – SCHACHTER / DEARING 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, 15-12) –
Daniele Lupo and Alex Ranghieri won their debut in the Beach Volleyball World Championship, beating Canadians Schachter / Dearing 2-1 (20-22, 21-18, 15-12). The Italian couple did well to react after a first set lost to the advantages (20-22), despite having found themselves in the lead (17-14). In the second part, the Italians and Canadians gave birth to a fine point-to-point duel (14-14), resolved in favor of the blue couple (21-18). In the tie-break Daniele and Alex managed the game very well and, once they took the lead, they no longer gave their opponents opportunities to return (15-12).
” This is a very important victory– Daniele Lupo underlined- above all because we didn’t start in the best way, but then we found the strength to react. Making your debut at a World Cup is always exciting, and besides, it always takes some time to take measurements in a huge facility like the Foro Italico power plant. “.
POOL A: CARAMBULA / ROSSI – JAWO / JARRA 2-0 (21-18, 21-15) –
The blues Carambula and Rossi on the sands of the center overtook the Gambians Jawo and Jarra in two sets, struggling a little in the first part and finding – minute by minute – understanding and playing capable of thrilling the public.
” I had an injury these days and today’s race allowed me to test my physical condition – Carambula’s words at the end of the race – I am satisfied with the game and, in general, with the passion that Enrico and I manage to put into every tournament. We love this game and it shows ».
” Participating in a World Cup at home is very nice – said Rossi – We were a little tense on the eve, but as Adrian said we were testing our physical condition. In the next games we expect battles, the group on paper may seem easy but hides many pitfalls “.
POOL F: MENEGATTI / GOTTARDI – KOLINSKE / HUGHES 2-0 (21-17, 21-19) –
Excellent debut for the blue Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi in the world championship. The Italians, in fact, got the better of the Americans Kolinske / Hughes 2-0 (21-17, 21-19), after showing off an excellent beach volleyball.
Marta and Valentina played strong 5-3 against the n.6 pair of the women’s draw, always maintaining the command of the game (13-10). Menegatti-Gottardi have almost made no mistakes and the Americans have had to give up (21-17).
The second set was more complicated, Kolinske / Hughes ran ahead and the blues had to chase. Point after point Marta and Valentina have moved up a level and thanks to an ace from Gottardi they have stretched 18-16. The Americans found parity again at 19-19, but the Italian couple did not lose clarity and with a new break they won the match, thanks to the ace of Gottardi (21-19).
” We are very happy with this victory– declared Marta Menegatti- the Americans are an excellent couple. Today there was a lot of wind and we were good at managing it, I want to congratulate Valentina because her service was decisive. This success will not make us change our attitude, we have to think one match at a time and then see how far we can go “.
