Denmark is certainly one of the fastest growing teams among all the national teams, especially since the new manager, Kasper Hjulmand, arrived on 1 August 2020. With him the balance is extremely positive and the team can be said to be more than ready to face the next world championships. But let’s get to know her better.
KASPER HJULMAND, AN IDENTITY FOOTBALL – Hjulmand arrived on the Danish bench in August 2020, when the Federation decided, surprisingly, not to renew the contract of the former Hareide coach. Destiny therefore wanted the pandemic to allow Hjulmand to lead Denmark to Euro 2020. The new coach had the great ability to fully reconcile the Danish national team with his own people, focusing precisely on the fact that the identity of the team must necessarily trace the identity of the nation. Starting from this assumption, he laid a solid foundation, which gave him the opportunity to build a team first of men and then of players. And the results have arrived: Euro 2020 semi-final, direct pass to Qatar 2022 and last Sunday he also beat the world champions 2-1. But, in addition to the results, the numbers also prove Hjulmand right: 66 goals scored and only 24 conceded in 29 games (20 wins, 2 draws and 7 defeats) and 22 players scored under his management (the top scorer and Maehle with 9 goals). It seems all set for a great world championship, which is only 5 months away.
FRANCE IN THE FATE – Last Sunday the Danish national team beat the reigning world champion team at the Stade de France, thanks to a brace from Cornelius. First dress rehearsal for the next world championship, given that in Qatar the two national teams will face each other in the qualifying round. But before that challenge there will be another one, next September 25th, in Denmark, also of Nations League. It is interesting that it is not the first time that France has been on the path of the Danes: in October 1908 Denmark made its absolute debut against the transalpines and also boasts its best victory against them (17-1 ), obtained a few days after the absolute debut. Of course, it was another football, but even in more recent times the Danes found themselves “les Bleus” in their own way, precisely at the most important moment of their history, that is that great European won in 1992, when in the last match of the Laudrup group and his teammates beat the French 2-1, eliminating them and earning the passage of the round, before going on to win the competition. Who knows if France is not a good omen at the World Cup.
TOWARDS QATAR 2022 – Two out of two wins in the first Nations League matches and only two defeats (against Scotland in the last qualifying match and against the Netherlands in a friendly match) in the last 10 matches are certainly a good sign ahead of the big date. Waiting for Denmark in Qatar will be France, Tunisia and one between Peru, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. A group certainly within reach for Hjulmand’s team, where the only obstacle could be Deschamps’s team, but, as they have already shown, the Danes are not at all afraid of the Danes.
