Antalya, trio of blue medals: silver for Curatoli and Errigo, bronze for Volpi

On the first day of the European Absolute Championships in Antalya 2022 Italy immediately won three podiums thanks to Luca Curatoli in the men’s saber and to Arianna Errigo and Alice Volpi in the women’s foil.

Two blue on the podium of the women’s foil, which is confirmed as a weapon of excellence in Italy: Arianna Errigo won the silver medal, Alice Volpi the bronze, but also Francesca Palumbo and Martina Favaretto did well by closing both in the top 10.

Arianna Errigo, seeded number two after the groups, easily won the first bouts of the day against the French Anita Blaze (15-8) and against the Polish Martyna Dlugosz (15-4). In the quarterfinals she faced the derby against the other Italian Francesca Palumbo, won with a score of 15-3 and then the match against the French Ysoara Thibus, which the Monza turned in her favor in the final closing with four hits in a row by 11 all to 15-11. The final was won by the German Leonie Ebert, 22, with a score of 15-11, which however allowed the Carabinieri athlete to win his seventh individual medal in a continental review. This is the second European silver for her, which is added to the two golds of Torun 2016 and Tbilisi 2017, the silver of Novi Sad 2018 and the bronzes of Plovdiv 2009, Legnano 2012 and Montreaux 2015.

The fourth European bronze for Alice Volpi also arrived in the same race: the Sienese class 1992 of the Fiamme Oro, who had already been on the third step of the podium in the three previous editions (Tbilisi 2017, Novi Sad 2018 and Dusseldorf 2019) and who started as before the ranking, in the draw of 32 she overtook the Swedish Miriam Schreiber 15-7 and then she beat the Ukrainian Kateryna Chentsova 15-10. In the quarterfinals the most uncertain assault against the German Anne Sauer: the match was still on 10 equal, then the blue put five hits in a row that decreed her passage to the semifinals, where the other German Leonie Ebert had the best 15-9.

“The European is always the stage of approaching the World Championship – said Alice Volpi at the end of the race – we are never at 100%, but already having this bronze around the neck is an excellent result. I arrived not in perfect physical shape, I did not participate in the Italian Championships due to a leg problem, but I managed to recover in time for this European Championship which I conclude happy with the result “.

The third Italian medal came from the individual men’s saber, in which Luca Curatoli won silver, his second career European medal after the 2017 bronze in Tbilisi. The Neapolitan of the Fiamme Oro made his debut in the main draw against the team-mate Pietro Torre, beaten 15-9, then overtook the English Jonathan Webb 15-7 and, in the quarterfinals, Georgia’s standard bearer Beka Bazadze: Curatoli was under 8-10, but managed to recover until 15- 11. With the same score came the success in the semifinal against the French Bolade Apithy. In the decisive assault against the Georgian Sandro Bazadze the blue got off to a good start, continuing up to 9-5, but then suffered the return of the opponent who won 15-11.

Among the other foil players guided at the bottom of the platform by CT Stefano Cerioni seventh place for Francesca Palumbo, beaten by Errigo in the derby of the quarter-finals, and tenth for Martina Favaretto, in turn defeated in an all-Italian challenge by Palumbo in the previous round.

Thus the coach of the blue foil Stefano Cerioni: «There is great satisfaction for these two medals. It is nice to see Arianna Errigo on the podium again after a growing season, as well as Alice Volpi who despite some physical problems in the last period has consolidated with an excellent third place. Of course, we could have won, but I am extremely happy for Arianna’s silver, Alice’s bronze and also the performances of Francesca Palumbo and Martina Favaretto, stopped only by two Italian derbies. We are on the right path towards the World Championship, obviously waiting for a team match we care a lot about ».

In the men’s saber, the other men of the gun manager Nicola Zanotti finished as follows: 13th Giovanni Repetti, who replaced Luigi Samele at the last minute and came out in the 16 against the Romanian Razvan Ursachi, 29th Michele Gallo and 30th Pietro Torre , the two young men of the team born in 2002 and 2001.

“The boys did what I hoped they would do – said Zanotti – we won a medal with Luca, then there was Repetti who did an excellent race and deserved to enter the 8 and the two kids who gained experience and did see that they are there: they represent the future and this means that we can hope well “.

Tomorrow scheduled individual women’s epee competitions with the blue Federica Isola, Rossella Fiamingo, Mara Navarria and Alberta Santuccio and men’s foil with gold and silver in charge of Dusseldorf 2019 Alessio Foconi and Daniele Garozzo together with Tommaso Marini and Giorgio Avola.
