Day, Robinson to lead Watkins staff
The first year after an ace was not smooth for the Watkins Memorial baseball team.
Without Justin Warrington, now with Ball State University, who followed Eric Arnett, now in the Milwaukee Brewers farm system to the No. 1 spot in the rotation, the Warriors struggled to win consistently.
Boys basketball | Gahanna 59, Dublin Coffman 53: Lions show their stuff
The Gahanna boys basketball team doesn't have much height, but coach Tony Staib is more than satisfied with all the extras that come with this model.
Making good use of its balance, depth and flexibility, Gahanna fought off Dublin Coffman for a 59-53 victory in a Division I regional semifinal last night in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.
"The main reason we're 25-0 is that we're a deep team with multiple kids who can get it done for us," Staib said. "When a player or two is off, one or two of our complementary players almost always picks up the slack."
Saturday boys basketball action: Gahanna Lincoln 71, Northland 45
Everyone in the standing-room-only Ohio Expo Center Coliseum expected a good game, probably a great game when Northland met Gahanna Lincoln in the Division I Region 3 final Saturday, March 20.
The Vikings were undefeated and the No 1-ranked boys basketball team in not only the state, but the country, and the Golden Lions, also undefeated, were Ohio’s D-I No. 2-ranked squad.
But hardly anyone expected an outcome like this.

Challenging season ahead for North's baseball squad
For the past couple of years, the Pickerington North baseball team has led a charmed life.
Last year, the Panthers were the Ohio Capital Conference Ohio Division champions, then followed that feat with Division I Central District and regional tournament titles.
North, with a 30-4 record, played all the way to the D-I state championship game, where it lost to Cincinnati Moeller 5-2 at Huntington Park.
Groveport baseball proceeds with Noble approach
Four regular-season wins and a loss in the opening round of last year's postseason tournament did not leave expectations very high for the 2010 Groveport-Madison baseball team.
Fortunately for the Cruisers, a new baseball coach won't let those expectations get in the way of turning around the team.
"We're going to surprise a lot of schools who think Groveport is an easy victory," Dick Noble said. "I'm sorry, but we're going to beat them."
Girls basketball: Reynoldsburg makes noise but falls short
No team in the girls basketball state tournament needed an introduction more than Reynoldsburg. Before this season, it had never advanced beyond the regional semifinals.
But by the end of a Division I semifinal last night, everyone in Value City Arena knew the Raiders could play some ball.
It took four free throws by Sydnee Penn in the final 1 minute, 43 seconds of overtime for Canton McKinley to squeeze out a 42-39 victory over Reynoldsburg in a game whose every bounce of the ball was hotly contested.
